Milica Čorbo from Župča makes amazing cakes

At a time when there are over 550,000 unemployed people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and demonstrators are demanding their rights on the streets, some more determined individuals have taken matters into their own hands and launched their own small business. Thus, more and more women are making decorative homemade cakes, which can significantly improve the household budget.

An example of this is Milica Čorbo, who came up with the idea for this business while looking for a cake for her then one-year-old son Almas, reports the Patria News Agency. Milica lives in Župča near Breza, and supplies cakes to the Sarajevo Canton area. She receives most of her orders through her Facebook page "torte milica".

- Since I needed a cake for about fifty people, the prices for cakes with his then favorite character, Bumba, ranged from 120-200 KM. My husband absolutely disagreed with spending so much on a cake, and wanting to afford it for him, I started researching fondant cakes and decided to make it myself – says Milica, adding that making the cake took four days.

Later, the business started on its own, Milica says, revealing that she posted pictures of new cakes online, and thus the business grew.

- Then I set prices and embarked on this adventure. This is not just art, it is also physical labor. Piles of dishes, wiping the floor dozens of times a day, lifting cakes weighing 20 kg. Fortunately, I have the support of my family; my husband helps me with fondant and cake layers, my father-in-law and mother-in-law look after the child, so I manage as I go – Milica added.

She further explains that the time required for making cakes varies, and that cakes with human faces are the most demanding, requiring five to six hours of work for such a figurine.

- While the cake layers, fillings, fondant, and figurines are made, filled, and finally assembled into a decoration, the average cake production takes 8 to 15 hours; I have spent up to two or three days on some. There is no routine in this business; every new figurine is a challenge. I use my hands and tools similar to those used by dentists – Milica added, emphasizing that by sharing experiences with women from neighboring countries Croatia and Serbia, she learned that it is indeed possible to make a living from this business there.

- The price of a cake there is calculated per kilogram and is around 12-15 euros per kg, while my cake weighing five to six kg here ranges from 60 KM to 90 KM depending on the decoration. The difference is obvious, so unfortunately, in our country, this job can only serve as an additional income. I enjoy every new cake, I love making figurines, and I accept every challenge – Milica added.

Wanting to take everything to a higher level, she also attended training for making floral decorations from edible gum paste so that she could offer customers in our country the service of making perfect floral decorations for wedding cakes.

- Currently, no one else in Sarajevo makes them, so our fellow citizens have not been able to have the desired floral arrangement until now. In Bosnia, I also have problems with the supply of materials. They come to me from all over the world: colors from America, England, flower paste from the Czech Republic, some tools from China, and my mother sends me many things from Serbia – Milica added.
