MFS-EMMAUS reunited two sisters who had not seen each other for years

The domestic non-governmental humanitarian organization MFS-EMMAUS launched a project a year ago called “Community services for elderly persons”. So far, the project has included 24 people from the municipalities of Doboj Istok and Gračanica, with the intention to increase that number and expand the project to Tuzla, Srebrenica and Sarajevo. The goal of the project is to act preventively so that these people can live undisturbed in their own homes, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

- In this way, we act preventively so that these people do not later have to go to reception centers such as our center „Duje“ in Doboj Istok, which currently houses 404 users with various socio-health pathologies. Many say that our Duje center is the last place of hope and refuge. With this open form of protection, in accordance with basic life needs, we provide health care for those with reduced mobility, immobile, seriously ill and persons with disabilities, where it is possible to provide medical care and monitor the needs of each user individually. Above all, human attention gives these people the strength and motivation to fight old age and illness. Today, we reunited two sisters who had not seen each other for years. It is difficult to describe their joy - stated Rabija Halilčević, project manager.

The team of experts involved in this project consists of a nurse/technician, caregiver, physiotherapist and a volunteer. For some time now, in addition to providing basic home care and household help services, the project team has been distributing hot meals, food packages, appropriate gifts and providing advisory support to users on a daily basis.

Eighty-five-year-old Ajiša H. from Lukavica Rijeka had a lifelong wish to see her sister Mejra, who lives in Gračanica, because the two sisters were prevented from doing so due to health and financial difficulties. Mejra recently became a home care user. The Emmaus team decided to reunite two sisters who had not seen each other for years.

- The goal of this project is to change and brighten the daily lives of our users and thus let them know that they are not alone and forgotten. Truly, old age can be beautiful if someone cares about you - said Halilčević.
