Meron appointed to new term as President of the Mechanism

The United Nations Secretary-General has appointed Judge Theodor Meron to a new term as President of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), commencing on 1 March 2016.

The new term of President Meron will last until 30 June 2018, provided that he is reappointed as a judge of the Mechanism. Expressing his intention to appoint President Meron to a new term, the United Nations Secretary-General highlighted President Meron's astute leadership of the Mechanism and his leading role in ensuring that the Mechanism remains small and efficient, in line with the vision of the United Nations Security Council.

Meron stated that he will continue to do his utmost to ensure that the Mechanism remains true to its goal of a more economical and efficient model of an international criminal court while adhering to its enduring commitment to due process and fair trials.
