(Patria) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that the coronavirus epidemic is the country's greatest challenge since World War II.
In a rare address to the nation, Merkel appealed to Germans to take the epidemic seriously, emphasizing that every citizen needs to play a role in preventing the spread of infection.
- This is serious. Take it seriously. Since the reunification of Germany... no, since World War II, there has not been a challenge for our country that depended so much on our collective, solidary action, Merkel said.
Germany confirmed 11,973 cases of infection on Wednesday evening, making it 5th on the list by number of infected. 28 people have died.
The Chancellor also said that Germany's healthcare system, although one of the best in the world, could soon be under enormous pressure due to the number of patients.
Merkel urged citizens to stay at home, and in cases where they must go out, to practice social distancing, despite the need for community in such crisis situations.
- I appeal to you to respect the rules. As a government, we will constantly review what needs to be corrected, as well as what still needs to be done, promised Chancellor Angela Merkel, Euronews reports.
