Srebrenica Memorial Center calls on UN member states to strengthen the International Criminal Court

(Patria) - On December 9, 1948, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was adopted, and in 2015, the decision on its commemoration, i.e., this date was established as the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Genocide and Prevention of Genocide.

On this occasion, the Srebrenica Memorial Center warned that in 2023, the number of people killed in global conflicts will exceed 300,000, which is a record number of people killed in one year in the 21st century.

In this regard, the Srebrenica Memorial Center warns that international mechanisms for determining criminal responsibility for genocide and crimes against humanity have never been weaker.

Through the Early Warning and Prevention Mechanism for Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity, the Memorial Center has developed a global network for data exchange and research, and warns that the trend of impunity and the absence of international calls for accountability of political and military leaders for crimes in more than 30 ongoing conflicts and wars around the world is alarming.

The Memorial Center states that the legacy of the ICTY and the ICTR should serve as an example to all that perpetrators will be caught and brought to justice.

"If the International Criminal Court does not make similar strides and achieve results in other conflicts, the idea of civilization's learned lessons will also be lost," the Srebrenica Memorial Center stated.
