Memagić has been donating his mayor's salary to students for the third year

The Mayor of Olovo Municipality, Đemal Memagić, is likely the only mayor in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the region, who does not receive a salary for his work. He has redirected this money to provide scholarships for the best students and pupils from the local community he manages.

- I am trying to contribute to the education of people from Olovo in this way – Memagić told the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP).

Memagić is a businessman, founder and owner of one of the most famous BiH textile brands, “Alma Ras”. This is his third year as the head of Olovo Municipality, as a candidate of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA), and he has never taken compensation for his work until now.

Instead of for himself, he finances pupils and students with that money. This year, 77 pupils will receive one-time aid in the amount of 200 KM and 22 students in the amount of 400 KM.

- Our policy is to finance the best high school pupils and students – says Memagić.

With his gesture, he says, he wants to reward diligent schoolchildren, show them that hard work pays off, and facilitate their path to becoming important citizens of society tomorrow, from whom the entire community will benefit, writes NAP.
