International Migrants Day is also observed in BiH

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed December 18 as International Migrants Day in 2000. On this day in 1990, the Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Their Families was adopted.

Migration is considered one of the biggest global challenges at the beginning of the 21st century, as more people are on the move today than at any other time in human history. 

The reasons for such high mobility can be found in economic reasons, but unfortunately also in natural disasters and wars. 

Many countries have been seriously affected by the migration crisis in recent years. It is likely that current migration flows will continue, but the emergence of new paths and routes is also possible.

The Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina explains that during 2016, Bosnia and Herzegovina continued to develop its migration legal framework by adopting several documents to improve the management of migration flows and enhance the rights of migrants. By creating a state strategic framework for migration and asylum management, Bosnia and Herzegovina recognized legal migrants as individuals who can contribute to the country's development and progress with their skills and abilities. At the same time, it has shown determination in reducing illegal movements and combating smuggling and trafficking in human beings for various purposes. 

- While emphasizing the rights of migrants, we must always remember to simultaneously advocate for the rights of citizens born in Bosnia and Herzegovina who are temporarily/permanently employed and legally residing abroad – the Ministry of Security of BiH stated. 

On the occasion of December 18 – International Migrants Day, the Ministry of Security calls on all institutions to make the necessary efforts to respond to current migration challenges in the best possible way, respecting the human rights of all migrants.
