Srebrenica Memorial Center: Adoption of the Resolution Closes Chapter in the Fight for Truth about Genocide

(Patria) - The Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center, the Memorial Monument and Cemetery for the victims of the 1995 genocide, and associations gathering the families of genocide victims welcome the adoption of the UN General Assembly Resolution on the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.

- By adopting the resolution and placing the Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide in the Official Calendar of the United Nations, we mark the final chapter in the journey of recognition of the genocide by the global world community.

Along with the judgments of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, we conclude three decades of struggle for the recognition of the truth about Srebrenica with this - said the Director of the Memorial Center, Emir Suljagić.

He emphasizes that the fight against genocide denial will continue, but that the public should remove deniers from the focus of attention and view them as isolated cases of defeated policies.

- The continuation of work on collecting information regarding the search for missing persons in the genocide, on which the Institute for Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the ICMP are diligently working, lies ahead of us.

At the same time, the focus of the Memorial Center's work will be on creating tools for educating future generations and internationalizing the study of the Srebrenica genocide, where the resolution serves as a foundation for new partnerships and cooperation opportunities.

Finally, the Memorial Center and the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina should become international actors in the fight for the prevention of crimes against humanity and genocide in contemporary conflicts.

We have won, we are closing a difficult chapter for our country. The path was long, it lasted for decades. Today and this Resolution bring hope that it is time for this society to heal.

We are moving away from the position of victim and have in our hands the mechanism to be those who will help others in need and do everything to ensure that the phrase "never again" truly carries weight and meaning - added Suljagić.

The Srebrenica Memorial Center expressed gratitude to the representatives of institutions, media, civil society organizations, and the academic community at home and abroad for their support during the advocacy for the adoption of the Resolution.

- Special thanks also go to the team members of the Memorial Center and our external associates for the great work that is behind us. It was worth it.

The Srebrenica Memorial Center will continue to be a bridge for interreligious and inter-ethnic dialogue, and will remain the leading state institution on the path to ensuring respect for all victims of the wars of the nineties - added Suljagić.
