May to visit Merkel and Macron, extraordinary EU summit on Wednesday

LONDON (Patria) - British Prime Minister Theresa May continued negotiations with the opposition Labour Party in an effort to find a Brexit solution that will gain a majority vote in parliament.

May will travel to Paris and Berlin on Tuesday to meet with Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel. She will seek to gain their support for her proposal of a shorter extension of the Brexit deadline by a couple of months, which she plans to present at the European Council summit on Wednesday.

We remind you that the Prime Minister requested an extension of the deadline for the implementation of Article 50 until June 30, but the EU rejected her proposal. Some EU officials explained that they would rather accept a proposal for a longer extension of one year with a clause for early termination if Great Britain manages to ratify the withdrawal agreement before the deadline.

May will attend an extraordinary European Council summit on Wednesday, convened solely due to the urgency of the Brexit issue.

In the event that the EU rejects the request for an extension on Wednesday, Great Britain will be forced to leave the EU on Friday. The only way to prevent this is for members of parliament to urgently vote to repeal Article 50.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister is under great pressure from Brexit supporters in parliament not to accept compromise solutions in the ongoing negotiations with the Labour Party, such as a permanent customs union with the EU after Brexit. 

The Prime Minister's decision to enter into negotiations with opposition leader Corbyn has met with an extremely negative reaction from parliamentarians who support Brexit, as well as a part of her Conservative Party, writes Patria.
