Martin Schulz gives up position as German foreign minister

BERLIN, (Patria) - President of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) Martin Schulz has given up taking the position of German foreign minister.

The reason for abandoning the head of German diplomacy lies in disagreement within the SPD over forming a coalition with the CDU of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

- I will not enter the new German government and sincerely hope that my decision will end the debate within the party - Schulz stated.

The current German foreign minister is Sigmar Gabriel, whom Schulz replaced a year ago as president of the SPD.

We recall, the SPD and CDU reached an agreement several days ago on forming a new German government, but the agreement must be confirmed by SPD members, nearly half a million of them.
