March of Peace near London, commemoration of the 29th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide begins in Great Britain

(Patria) - The commemoration of the 29th anniversary of the bloodiest crime in Europe since World War II began in Great Britain with a March of Peace in the town of Guildford, near London.

A large number of members of the BiH diaspora responded to the call of Mujo Delić and his family and friends to pay tribute to all victims of the Srebrenica genocide with a two-hour walk and a fitting program.

During the walk, Delić presented to all participants what the breakthrough looked like in order to reach free territory.

He spoke about his survival, the loss of his family and everyone he knew, the way they survived severe injuries, and carrying the wounded in difficult conditions.

At the end of the multi-hour march, a history lesson was held, with a focus on young people.

Alen Suljić was nine years old during the Srebrenica genocide. He described to those present how he survived Potočari with his mother and two brothers, where he saw with his own eyes what the Chetniks were doing to innocent people and how people were hanging themselves out of despair.

They fled from the perpetrators with the intention of reaching free territory. Alen lost his father during this death march.

Zijad Fajković from Bosanska Gradiška was twelve years old when his Serb neighbors took his father and uncle in 1992.

Even after thirty-two years, they have not been found, so he still doesn't know if they are alive.

He recounted how, as a twelve-year-old, he came to Great Britain with his mother and sister via Croatia and Slovenia.

Meho Jakupović recounted the horrors he survived in Serb camps in Bosanska Krajina, and Fahra Jamaković, from Sarajevo with a temporary address in London, read two poems about Srebrenica.

Samir Mehmedović read a story about a son and mother, under the emotional title "I Didn't Kiss You, Mother".

Sabit Jakupović, originally from Kozarac, survived two camps - Manjača and Omarska.

He described the fear and pain of injuries that led him to be brought to England as a medical evacuee.

He has received recognition from King Charles III for his many years of dedication to education and the commemoration of the genocide.

Finally, Zaim Pašić, president of the BH UK Network and a veteran of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, addressed the attendees.

On behalf of the BH UK Network, Zaim thanked the organizer and added that he was pleased to see many young people.

He called on them to support each other and not to forget their homeland, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jasmin ef. Odobašić, along with his fellow imams, recited Yasin and Dua for all the martyrs of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The program was hosted by Lejla Delić-Ćatibušić, whose family lost more than 30 members in the genocide. She participates in the March of Peace every year.

- I am in contact with BiH youth around the world, and together we contribute to organizing the March of Peace.

I am proud of the fact that every year during Srebrenica Memorial Week, more than 1,000 commemorations are organized in the UK.

As a young person of Bosnian origin, I thank the Government of the United Kingdom, the organization Remembering Srebrenica, the BH UK Network, and numerous activists who make a huge contribution to ensuring that the Srebrenica genocide is not forgotten - said Lejla.

Largely thanks to the organization Remembering Srebrenica, the United Kingdom is the only country outside of Bosnia and Herzegovina that commemorates the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide at a national level.

It does so with the support of the BiH community on the Island, eight regional committees and three national committees in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and more than 1,500 activists who pay tribute to the victims and survivors of the genocide and teach people about the dangers of hatred and the importance of building more cohesive communities for all.
