Marko Atilla Hoare Responds to Šarčević: Genocide Partially Succeeded Because Bosniaks Believed in the Fairy Tale of 'Brotherhood and Unity'

(Patria) - The comment by Franjo Šarčević, an assistant at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics in Sarajevo, on the publication of a photo of Sarajevo Mayor Benjamina Karić (SDP) with a boy wearing a beret featuring the RBiH flag with lilies, has caused strong reactions in our public.

"This picture is worth preserving as a symbol of a hopelessly sick society which, I fear, even God can no longer help," Šarčević stated publicly, expressing his disapproval.

The renowned British historian, and one of the best experts on the contemporary history of our country, Marko Atilla Hoare, also gave his perspective on this issue.

"It is nice to see Sarajevo Mayor Benjamina Karić celebrating Bosnia and Herzegovina's Independence Day with other patriots. It is incredible that even the slightest trace of Bosnian-Herzegovinian patriotism expressed by a social democratic mayor is considered 'Bosniak extremism' in the eyes of some people.

Bosnian nationalism is not the same as Greater Serbian or Greater Croatian nationalism. Just as Ukrainian nationalism is not the same as Russian. Oppressed, colonized people 'need' nationalism. Everyone has flags of Ukraine + Palestine, so why are BiH flags a problem?

The genocide in BiH partially succeeded because too many people in 1992 were deceived by the fairy tale of 'brotherhood and unity'. When a new generation of Karadžić and Boban sets out to complete the destruction of BiH, anti-nationalist moralizing will not save the country.

For the record: Bosniak nationalism is negative when directed against Serbs, Croats, Jews, etc., in general. But there is nothing chauvinistic about loving BiH and wanting it to be independent and unified like neighboring Croatia or Serbia."
