Marine Le Pen: EU could lose more than Great Britain

(Patria) – French right-wing leader Marine Le Pen said the EU will face even greater consequences than Brexit, but also that she does not want France to leave the alliance.

In a televised interview with Euronews, she also said that if her reform plan to turn the EU into a union of nations is not adopted, 'other countries will also leave'.

Her new stance on France leaving the EU is not in line with her earlier, much more radical position. Namely, Le Pen previously advocated for France to leave the EU - 'Frexit' - and announced a referendum similar to the one in Great Britain that led to Brexit.

However, her stance changed when she lost the presidential election in 2017, with Emmanuel Macron winning.

Incidentally, Le Pen believes that right-wing politicians in the EU have the power to 'radically modify' Europe and says she hopes that 'Great Britain will rejoin the EU when we create something where each nation retains its own freedom'.

She still considers Europe a 'prison' even though every member can leave it.

EU leaders barely hid their desire to make the split as difficult as possible, claims right-winger Le Pen, adding that the actions of other nations - including US President Trump's efforts to impose tariffs on certain goods - prove that, economically, protectionism is the right path. 'Today we realise that we will have to negotiate effectively, and perhaps we can apply some form of economic protectionism for our countries,' Marine Le Pen said in an interview with Euronews.
