Judge Carmel Agius has been elected president of the Hague Tribunal, and Liu Daqun vice-president, BIRN reported, as carried by the Patria news agency.
Agius will succeed Theodor Meron as president.
Maltese judge Agius has been vice-president of this court since 2011, and will assume his new duties on 17 November.
Agius and Chinese judge Daqun were elected to a two-year term by a decision of the permanent judges at an extraordinary plenary session.
Both judges have served on the appeals chambers of the international tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda (ICTY/MICT and ICTR).
Agius has been at the Tribunal since 2001, and Daqun since 2000, NAP reports.
