(Patria) - At the site of the horrific accident in which two young doctors lost their lives, Azra Spahić on the spot and Alma Suljić almost a month later, a memorial plaque for Azra and Alma was unveiled today at Marijin Dvor.
The plaque bears the inscription: “There are lives that last a short time, yet leave and give much more…”, and it is dedicated, as stated by the Sarajevo City Administration, to the memory of tragically extinguished young lives.
The mothers of Alma and Azra found the strength to unveil the memorial plaque.
The mother of the deceased Alma Suljić, Adela Suljić, said that this plaque should raise awareness among all of us and thanked everyone for its realization.
"We must be aware of the problems in society and do everything in our power to change certain things. We must be aware of the seriousness of traffic participants. We must not drive over the speed limit, under the influence of alcohol... We must detect and prevent problems. Political parties should unite and do everything regarding changes to the Traffic Safety Law. Penalties must be harsher. We want everyone who passes by this street, when they see this plaque, to remember the tragedy and be aware of the true values in life. Let us be more tolerant and behave in accordance with moral values," she said.
Her husband Edin Suljić said that there is no need to prove something that is as clear and pure as a tear.
"The perpetrator should receive the maximum sentence, as a warning to potential future perpetrators. We are witnesses to new tragedies every day. It is time to put an end to street racing, to street bullies. It is time to defeat evil. A few months ago, our children were here, tomorrow it could be anyone's child," he stated.
The mother of the deceased Azra Spahić stated that nothing can lessen the pain and grief of the family.
“Our pain and grief cannot be lessened by any plaque. It means something to us only as a warning and as a memorial to such two individuals. Thank you to everyone who participated, especially the Mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić. Endless thanks to the citizens of Sarajevo, we have enormous support as a family. I am unable to keep up with everything that is happening; my mind cannot comprehend it. Last night I was at the place where a woman was beaten. That could have been me. I have no strength. Legislation is zero, penalties are zero. I am horrified by the state and the system we live in. Children need to be raised properly. That requires parental involvement; children cannot be left to the streets," she said.
In the accident that occurred on May 26, 2023, when Armina Berberović, under the influence of alcohol, struck them with a vehicle, Alma Suljić's sister was also injured.
Berberović's trial has begun, and the families expect the maximum sentence.
