(Patria) - Chairman of the Delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (PSBiH) to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Saša Magazinović addressed the
plenary session of this body, held in Strasbourg. Magazinović spoke about the report on the topic "The role of the Council of Europe in conflict prevention, restoring the credibility of international institutions and promoting global peace".
In his address, Magazinović emphasized that the security and stability of the Western
Balkans are threatened, the anticipation of a new war has become a normal occurrence, while larger-scale incidents that disrupt the sense of security are becoming increasingly frequent.
He added that international bodies use diplomatic rhetoric that yields no results and asked if the time has come to add to the European Convention on Human Rights, which defines the right to liberty and security, the "human right to live free from the fear of new conflict"?
Magazinović also said that he agrees with the thesis that the cost of war is always several times
higher than the cost of prevention, but also stressed that those who work on preventing and stopping war, both the Council of Europe and the international community as a whole, must have credibility that is gained over years and lost very quickly and easily.
"If a teacher tolerates the bad behavior of one student – what will happen to the other
children? First, they will be dissatisfied, and then they will also start to misbehave. This is
the situation we are in, where double standards are commonplace.
Bad students are tolerated, good ones are taken for granted and often left without reward. This is
a problem that will become so large that it will completely destroy the credibility of the international community, and thus the Council of Europe," said Magazinović.
"European and international institutions were late in preventing existing conflicts and
wars. The Western Balkans is a place where new, improved prevention tools should be implemented. The diplomatic language used so far is ineffective, messages of concern are
frustrating because nothing follows them, which also calls into question the credibility of the international community. If we want to be facilitators of peace and advocates for human rights in
democratic security, we must be honest, brave, and aware," concluded
Magazinović.
