Magazinović and Emrić in Novi Grad: United Against Nuclear Waste Repository

(Patria) - Saša Magazinović and Jasmin Emrić, members of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, visited the municipality of Novi Grad where, at the invitation of Mayor Miroslav Drljača, they participated in the work of the First Thematic Session of the Novi Grad Municipal Assembly on the topic "Radioactive Waste in the Una River Valley - Threats and Perspectives".

In his address, Magazinović, who is also the president of the Green Club, reminded of the conclusions of the international conference recently held in the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which express strong opposition to the disposal and storage of nuclear and radioactive waste on the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and emphasized that the activities of the neighboring country so far have not been carried out in accordance with international conventions, directives, agreements and standards.

Emphasizing that the fight against the intention of Croatian institutions to store and dispose of nuclear and radioactive waste at a location that predominantly threatens the population, flora and fauna in Bosnia and Herzegovina has united all political forces in our country, he positively assessed and welcomed the recently adopted conclusions of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has actively become involved in resolving a potentially major interstate problem. Magazinović also expressed satisfaction with the upcoming activities announced by the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which he believes should take the lead and coordinate all actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and announced additional engagement of the Green Club both domestically and internationally in order to jointly fight for the interests of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its citizens.

He also announced the possibility of soon forming a legal and expert team that would prepare scenarios for legal and institutional proceedings, if the Republic of Croatia continues to ignore and disregard the adopted and presented positions through the Resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the conclusions of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jasmin Emrić, who is also a member of the Green Club and initiator of numerous activities aimed at stopping the formation of a nuclear and radioactive waste repository at the Trgovska Gora location, in his address emphasized the importance of past activism and timely response of local communities, and called on all local communities, cities and municipalities in the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina that are directly and indirectly affected and impacted by the possible negative influence of the radioactive and nuclear waste storage/disposal site at the Trgovska Gora location to continue to monitor, plan and organize events aimed at raising awareness about health protection, environmental protection and environmental safety, as well as opposing and preventing the establishment of the said radioactive and nuclear waste storage and disposal site.

Emrić assessed today's gathering, which was attended by representatives of state and entity institutions, representatives of the municipality of Novi Grad, as well as the non-governmental sector and the academic community, as yet another indicator that even the most complex problems in our society can be solved through joint efforts and coordination.
