French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday that France will take the strictest measures against Islamist separatism, and will put an end to the system in which foreign countries send imams to French mosques.
In a speech delivered in Mulhouse in southern France, Macron explained that the goal is to 'reduce foreign influence' and 'ensure that everyone respects the laws of the Republic'.
The Muslim community in France is the largest in Europe.
He stated that Morocco, Algeria and Turkey each send about 300 imams to France every year, and announced that those arriving in 2020 will be the last.
- I will not allow any country to incite separatism, Macron stressed.
