Curine njive site in Stari Grad: New trees felled, soil crumbling on previous cracks

(Patria) - Employees of the Civil Protection Service of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo and members of the protection and rescue services of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo have determined that at the "Curine njive" site - Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad and Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo (Bostarići), deep cracks are still present on the ground, new felled trees have been observed below the playground area, and there is a constant inflow of water of higher intensity at the "Curine njive-playground" site, which creates a partially flooded meadow that, due to temperature fluctuations, leads to the formation of ice.

No water or constant inflow of water into the landslide body was observed in the upper part of the deposited material/embankment. No permanent water flows were recorded on the affected terrain. A temporary nameless stream has slightly cut into the central and lower part of the slope/embankment, and in a part of its course, it disappears over a short distance of a few meters, infiltrating into the cracks of the landslide body.

Previous measurements of the amount of water appearing on the eastern flank of the deposited material/embankment measured 2.2 l/min (measurements performed by experts from "Rudarski Institut" d.d. Tuzla for the investor "Park ruža" d.o.o. Tuzla). The occurrence of water in the western part of the landslide, directly below the embankment, cannot be precisely determined. This water penetrates the landslide body and weakens the soil's resistance characteristics along the slip surface (it is assumed to originate from underground catchments that are under pressure from the earth or construction material from the embankment).

In the area below the "Curine njive-playground" site (part of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo), the falling of several new trees and the crumbling of soil at the site of previous cracks are visible.

Upon visiting the "Knjeginjac" site - Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad on Sunday, employees of the Civil Protection Service of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo determined that no new quantities of earth and stone material are being deposited at the site, nor are any construction works being carried out.

It was also determined that in the earlier period, the Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad installed some metal poles and a protective fence intended to prevent the potential deposition of new quantities of earth and stone material. No new deposition of construction or other material is visible at the landfill near the construction site of the "Trebević Hills" facility.

At the Bistrički potok site - Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo (Boguševac) and Municipality of Istočni Stari Grad, upon visiting the site, it was observed that the Bistrički potok stream bed is still partially filled with material from the landfill, fallen trees, and previously cut trees. No new collapses of material from the landfill in the form of earth-stone material and trees were observed, nor was any removal of previously deposited earth-stone material and trees observed. Due to snowfall, it is not possible to determine the exact condition of the Bistrički potok stream bed.

The Municipal Civil Protection Headquarters of Stari Grad Sarajevo has organized 24-hour monitoring of the terrain in the endangered landslide areas, Curine njive and Bistrički potok, in order to provide early warning to the endangered population and their possible evacuation.

Acting on the Order of the Civil Protection Headquarters of Sarajevo Canton regarding the evacuation of the population from the endangered area of the Municipality of Stari Grad, starting from November 1, 2024, employees of the Civil Protection Service of the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo regularly visit residential buildings and citizens in Bostarići, Ablakovina, and Ablakovina čikma streets, according to the FUCZ report.
