Kuwait: Negotiations aimed at bringing a ceasefire in Yemen currently suspended

The Yemeni government temporarily suspended peace talks in Kuwait yesterday, which have been ongoing for several days, in an effort to reach an end to the conflict in this country in Southwest Asia. The talks were suspended after the Houthi movement and its allies seized a military base north of the capital Sanaa, Reuters reported. 

In the Houthi attack, several soldiers defending the Umaliku military base were killed. These are soldiers who refused to side with either party in the war between the Iran-allied Houthis and government forces backed by Saudi Arabia. 

Yemen is divided into three warring factions - the Houthi Shia rebels, forces loyal to President Hadi (mostly Sunnis from the south of the country), and a third faction represented by extremists and terrorists, namely Al-Qaeda.
Saudi Arabia entered the war against the Houthi rebels in western and northwestern Yemen, joined by Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain, Pakistan, Egypt, Morocco, and Sudan, with certain logistical support provided by the US.
On the side of the Houthi rebels is Iran.

- We have suspended the talks indefinitely in protest against the military actions and continued violations of the ceasefire - a member of the Yemeni government told Reuters. The source wished to remain anonymous.

Yemen's Foreign Minister and the government's chief delegate at the talks in Kuwait, Abdel-Malek al-Makhlafi, said the Houthi attack had "undermined" the continuation of the talks.

So far, at least 6,200 people have been killed in the conflicts in Yemen, and the war has also brought a major humanitarian crisis to an already impoverished country, Patria reports.
