Inspection conducted at KCUS Pediatric Clinic, analysis results pending

(Patria) - Due to increased public interest regarding hospital-acquired infections at the University Clinical Center of Sarajevo (KCUS), the Cantonal Administration for Inspection Affairs of Sarajevo Canton (KUIP KS) informs the public that at the beginning of 2024, through proactive action by the management of the Cantonal Administration for Inspection Affairs of Sarajevo Canton, the need for constant supervision of hospital-acquired infections in KS was recognized.

At that time, as they further state, constant coordination was established between the Public Institution Institute for Public Health KS and the Cantonal Administration for Inspection Affairs of KS, related to the control of hospital infections at KCUS, as well as in other healthcare institutions, with the aim of constantly monitoring timely reporting of hospital infections, informing, and taking measures to control hospital infections.

- In accordance with the above, the sanitary inspection of the Cantonal Administration for Inspection Affairs of KS conducted an inspection at KCUS this week on the subject matter. Namely, after two more reports of hospital-acquired infections (HAI) from the pediatrics department of KCUS were received by the Institute for Public Health, the Cantonal Administration for Inspection Affairs of KS was duly informed, and the cantonal sanitary inspection immediately reacted and organized an inspection in the presence of representatives of the Public Institution Institute for Public Health KS, to monitor the epidemiological situation and take legally prescribed measures.

The inspection was primarily conducted to determine the timeliness of reporting hospital-acquired infections, then the implementation of measures to suppress and control hospital-acquired infections, along with official sampling for the control of equipment, materials, and supplies for hygienic correctness through microbiological analysis of swabs. The inspection procedures are still ongoing, and it would be premature to talk about the results at this time - the inspection announced.

They add that the Cantonal Sanitary Inspection will continue to intensify sanitary inspection supervision at KCUS and other healthcare institutions, in coordination with the Public Institution Institute for Public Health KS, with the aim of controlling the implementation of legally prescribed measures related to the control and suppression of hospital infections.

- The adoption and observance of the program for the control and prevention of the spread of hospital infections is of exceptional importance, as is continuous teamwork and supervision of employees, patients, the hospital environment, sterility of materials, medical waste management, and the like, which cantonal sanitary inspectors consistently insist on during inspections in all healthcare institutions. According to the regular work plan of the Inspectorate of Sanitary, Health, Pharmaceutical Inspections and Food Inspection of the Cantonal Administration for Inspection Affairs of KS for the month of May, the sanitary inspection is conducting inspections of private healthcare institutions - polyclinics, with the aim of supervising the implementation and application of measures to prevent and spread infections - the statement from the Cantonal Administration for Inspection Affairs of KS states.
