Criminal Healthcare System: Girl (14) Collapses at School, Emergency Refuses to Come Because Parents Are Not Present

(Patria) - We witness daily that healthcare in Sarajevo Canton is not working. Another proof of this was published by the portal Hayat.ba, after an appeal by a mother.

The concerned mother with initials S. B. (name known to the Hayat editorial board) of a girl attending elementary school "Osman Nuri Hadžić" in Dobrinja recounted how she experienced a real drama yesterday when she received a call from the school that the health condition of her 14-year-old daughter was poor.

"My daughter's homeroom teacher called me to inform me that the child was unwell. Since I am a healthcare worker, I didn't want to panic; I told them to give her something sweet and some water," says the concerned mother.

She adds that she then told her older daughter to go pick up her sister.

Emergency refused to come

"Since my older daughter is 19, I had full confidence to send her to pick her up. In the meantime, the homeroom teacher called me again and asked if I agreed for her to call the Emergency. When I realized it was very serious, I asked if there was a need for me to come as well. However, when the older daughter had already arrived, the school called the Emergency because her condition worsened; the girl couldn't stand on her feet," explains the mother.

After that, another call came from the school informing the mother that the Emergency would not come unless the child's guardian was present, which, as she says, shocked her.

"They told me at the school that this is not the first case where the Emergency refused to come because the guardian was not with the child. Imagine if it were something more serious. Luckily, the child came to soon after those chocolates," she said.

The girl's blood sugar had dropped, which is the reason why, as the mother says, 'the girl collapsed.'

"Her blood was drawn. Her sugar after two chocolates and a pack of candies was 3.8. That is the lower limit of sugar. Her blood pressure was 90 over 70. Both her blood pressure and sugar dropped, and that's why she collapsed," explained the mother.

"I felt lost and helpless. I am a healthcare worker myself, but I felt completely helpless. They told the homeroom teacher that when the parent arrives, then they can come to the scene. That means, in the sense that if the parent doesn't have a car or transportation, then they will come. When something is urgent, you don't wait. Since the child was losing consciousness and later collapsed, they should not have waited. The Emergency should come then. What if the parent was outside Bosnia, outside Sarajevo!? What if the child fell on the street, would they wait there for the guardian to come? If a child is at school, their supervisors are the homeroom teacher, psychologist, and pedagogue, and they have the absolute right to call the Emergency and be responsible for the child until the parent arrives," the concerned mother told Hayat.ba
