Queen approves Brexit law

(Patria) - British Queen Elizabeth II has approved the Brexit law under which the United Kingdom leaves the European Union (EU) on 31 January.

The law, which provides the legal basis for the official exit of Britain from the EU on 31 January, came into force with the Queen's approval. This legal act had earlier passed the lower house of parliament, the House of Commons, and was returned with certain amendments to the House of Lords.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson cancelled the amendments using his majority in the House of Commons and returned the bill to the House of Lords.

Under the Brexit agreement between the United Kingdom and the EU, the country will effectively remain a member of the union until 31 December, but will not be involved in political decision-making mechanisms. During this transition period, the parties will negotiate a comprehensive free trade agreement.

If the United Kingdom wishes to extend the transition period, it must submit a request by June at the latest. However, Johnson's government has stated that it will not request an extension and that, whether an agreement is reached or not, it will separate the country from the EU on 31 December.
