Amira Medunjanin's concert concludes Baščaršijske noći, traffic closure in several streets

(Patria) - The Baščaršijske noći festival concludes on Wednesday, July 31st, with a concert by Amira Medunjanin at Trg Prve brigade policije.

Although the concert starts at 9 PM, traffic will be closed from 7 PM until 1 AM in the streets of Avdaga Šahinagića, Šeher Ćehajina čikma, Obala Isa bega Ishakovića (section from Vijećnica bridge to Šeher Ćehajina ćuprija bridge).

Traffic flow regulation, in the area of complete traffic closure and at intersections where traffic is directed to alternative routes, will be carried out by members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton. After the established time, i.e., when safety conditions for motor vehicle traffic are met, MUP members will re-establish the regular traffic regime.

The concert is organized by the Bosnian Cultural Center KS as part of the Baščaršijske noći festival, under the auspices of the Government of Sarajevo Canton, the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo, the City of Sarajevo, the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism, and in partnership with the Sarajevo Canton Tourist Board/Visit Sarajevo.

Amira Medunjanin is performing for the first time as part of the Baščaršijske noći event with her ensemble, which includes: Mario Rašić - bass, Leopold Stašić - violin, Boško Jović - guitar, and Arslan Trtak, guitar.

One of the most famous vocal interpreters, whose name in recent times has become synonymous with sevdah and sevdalinka, will present traditional sevdalinka songs, as well as original compositions from her rich musical repertoire to the audience. Since her first studio album “Rosa” in 2003, Amira has released more than ten albums and in the past 20 years has received numerous awards worldwide for promoting the cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Among others, she also received the Porin award for best female vocal performance and best world music album.

Amira was born in Sarajevo at a time when the popularity of traditional music in the former Yugoslavia was at its peak, and sevdah held a special place for her. The sevdalinka songs she learned from her mother were the most beautiful songs. Her fascination with the oral tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina led her to dedicate herself to creating a unique voice within sevdalinka to fully explore their expressive capacity.

Music journalist and writer Garth Cartwright called her the “Bosnian Billie Holiday,” comparing how Amira plays with sevdah and finds new context and form in a tradition hundreds of years old.
