Konaković speaks with Finci: Jewish community is an inseparable part of BiH society, Sarajevo was their refuge in the 15th century

(Patria) - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Elmedin Konaković met today, June 16, 2025, in Sarajevo, with the President of the Jewish Community in BiH Jakob Finci.

During an open and constructive conversation, current topics regarding the status of the Jewish Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the challenges it faces in the contemporary social and political context were discussed.

Special attention was paid to the recent cancellation of the European Rabbinical Conference, which was planned to be held in Sarajevo. Minister Konaković reiterated the commitment of the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina to support dialogue, religious freedom, and international gatherings that promote understanding and cooperation among religious communities.

The importance of the Jewish Community as an inseparable part of Bosnian-Herzegovinian society was emphasized in the conversation.

Minister Konaković pointed out that Jews have been an important part of the cultural, historical, and social fabric of BiH for centuries, recalling the rich tradition of coexistence and solidarity, especially the openness of Sarajevo – a city that provided refuge to exiled Jews as early as the 15th century.

A willingness to continue and deepen cooperation between state institutions and the Jewish Community was expressed mutually, in order to preserve the multi-ethnic and multi-religious structure of society, and to strengthen the fight against all forms of antisemitism, discrimination, and intolerance.

The meeting concluded with a joint assessment that mutual respect, dialogue, and cooperation are the foundation of a stable and inclusive society in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
