Germany's 'traffic light coalition' finally agreed, Olaf Scholz to be Chancellor

(Patria) - Two months after the parliamentary elections in Germany, the 'traffic light coalition' between the Social Democratic SPD, the liberal FDP, and the Greens has finally been agreed upon. The winner of the elections, the SPD, has won the chancellorship, and their candidate Olaf Scholz will hold the position of head of government.

Well-informed German journalists are sharing speculations about the composition of the government on Twitter. According to Moritz Rödle of ARD, the Social Democrats should receive six ministries, the Greens five, and the liberals four.

The Greens seem to have fared best in the negotiations, as in addition to some key ministries (economy and climate, foreign affairs), they are also getting the position of candidate to succeed Ursula von der Leyen as head of the European Commission, to be elected in 2024. This position, by all accounts, is destined for the Green Party leader Annalena Baerbock, who will prepare for this role as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The Social Democrats will, among other things, receive the portfolios for internal affairs, defense, development, and a new ministry for housing, while the leader of the liberals, Christian Lindner, will be the Minister of Finance, as speculated.
