Commemoration on the occasion of Irfan Horozović's death on Monday at 10:30 AM, funeral at Bare Cemetery at 1:30 PM

(Patria) - A commemoration for Irfan Horozović will be held on Monday, December 8th at 10:30 AM at the National Theatre Sarajevo, organized by the Bosniak Cultural Community, the Writers' Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the PEN Centre in Bosnia and Herzegovina as the key institutions of which Horozović was a member and collaborator.

The funeral and burial will take place on the same day at 1:30 PM at the City Cemetery "Bare" in Sarajevo.

Irfan Horozović passed away on December 2nd, 2025, in Sarajevo. He was born on April 27th, 1947, in Banja Luka, where he completed primary school and high school. He studied and graduated in Comparative Literature and South Slavic Languages and Literatures at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Zagreb, where he began his literary work more comprehensively.

He was one of the most significant Bosniak and Bosnian-Herzegovinian writers, an accomplished short story writer, novelist, playwright, poet, and essayist, as well as a writer for children and youth, achieving an exceptionally rich and diverse authorial opus, starting from the radio drama *The Sixth Death of Benjamina Talha* (1968) and the poetry collection *Zvečajsko blago* (1969), up to his last novel *The Snow Tiger Jumps Through a Fiery Hoop* (2022). Among his works, the short story collection *Talhe or the Fountain Garden* (1972), the novels *Rea* (1987) and *Kalfa* (1988), then the short story collections *Exiled City* (1994) and *Bosnian Palimpsest* (1995), the novels *Berlin Unknown Passerby* (1998) and *Filmofil* (2000), and especially the novel *Imotski Kadija* (2000), or the novels *William Shakespeare in Dar es Salaam* (2002) and *Dogs of Wind* (2003), the short story collection *Endless Homeland* (2005), and other works created in various genres, are particularly noteworthy.

Irfan Horozović's literary creation played a very important role in the development of contemporary Bosniak and Bosnian-Herzegovinian literature, especially in the context of the poetics of high modernism and postmodernism, and the opening of domestic literary practice to new and different thematic interests and literary procedures. For his literary work, he was awarded numerous literary awards and recognitions, including the City of Banja Luka Award "Veselin Masleša" (1980), the Award of the Writers' Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1988), the Award for the Best Children's Book in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1987), the Award of the Writers' Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1998), the "Meša Selimović" Award for the best novel published in the linguistic area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro (2003), the "25th November" Award for lifetime achievement (2017), and a number of other awards and recognitions. Irfan Horozović's work has also been included in the prestigious canonical edition *Bosniak Literature in 100 Books*, published by the Bosniak Cultural Community.
