Commemoration and burial of academician Muhamed Filipović

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - A commemoration for academician Muhamed Filipović, who passed away in Sarajevo at the age of 91, will be held today starting at 10:00 AM at the Rectorate of the University of Sarajevo.

A commemoration at the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ANU BiH), of which Filipović was a member, will be held on March 3.

The head of the Islamic Community (IZ) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Husein ef. Kavazović, will lead the funeral prayer for academician Muhamed Filipović after the Friday prayer at the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque in Sarajevo. The burial will take place at 1:30 PM at the Bare City Cemetery.

Muhamed Filipović was born on August 3, 1929, in Banja Luka. He completed primary school and a gymnasium in his hometown. He studied philosophy, along with natural sciences and history, in Belgrade and Zagreb, and graduated in 1952. He defended his doctorate in philosophy in 1961 at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo. In the same year, he was elected as an assistant professor, in 1967 as an associate professor, and in 1972 as a full professor for the subjects Logic with Methodology and Methodology of Scientific Work in the Department of Philosophy and Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Sarajevo.

From his first election until his retirement in 1999, academician Filipović regularly taught the aforementioned subjects at his faculty, and also lectured at other faculties and scientific institutions in the former country and abroad (Germany, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain, the United States of America, Canada, and Russia).

He is the author of a large number of studies, monographs, and other works from various scientific fields – logic, history of philosophy, history of spiritual and cultural life of Bosnia and Herzegovina, aesthetics, sociology, and politics. He also wrote literary criticism and essays and led numerous polemics and discussions on many social issues. He was also involved in lexicography and was the editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Yugoslavia for BiH. With his works and public appearances, he raised numerous questions, initiated discussions and polemics that resonated in our public sphere. He was elected a corresponding member of ANU BiH in 1978, and a full member in 1987. He served as the Vice-President of ANU BiH from 1999 to 2008 and as the Director of the Center for Lexicology and Lexicography of ANU BiH.
