Kocijančič: Denial and Revisionism Contradict European Values

BRUSSELS, (Patria) - The spokesperson of the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, Maja Kocijančič, stated that the final verdict in the case of Radovan Karadžić before the Appeals Chamber of the Mechanism for Criminal Courts in The Hague closes a case that touches on some of the most tragic events in recent European history, including war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. 

„We deeply sympathize with those who lost their loved ones and those who survived“, Kocijančič stated.

Her written response states that the European Union fully respects the decision of the Hague Tribunal (ICTY) and the Appeals Chamber of the Mechanism for Criminal Courts in The Hague (IRMCT).

"We reiterate that full cooperation with the IRMCT, as the successor of the ICTY, is necessary. The EU expects all political leaders in the region to support the decisions of international tribunals and to refrain from any statements or actions that could cast doubt on the independence and impartiality of the judicial process. Denial and revisionism are in contradiction with the most fundamental European values. International criminal law not only contributes to ending impunity, but also fosters trust and reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the entire region. The EU also supports efficient and effective domestic prosecution of war crimes, which complements and continues the work of international tribunals. Reconciliation requires societies to honestly and factually assess the past and unite all parties in the conflict. Education and awareness are key in this regard“, Kocijančič concluded.
