KCUS: 17 reported cases of leptospirosis from May 14-21, two patients hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Clinic

(Patria) - In response to media reports about the appearance of symptoms indicating a possible infectious disease among citizens from the Novi Grad Sarajevo municipality, particularly the Dobrinja settlement, the University Clinical Center Sarajevo (KCUS) informs the public as follows:

"According to the latest data available from the Clinical Microbiology Department of KCUS, from May 14 - May 21, 2025, 17 laboratory-confirmed cases of leptospirosis were reported to the Public Health Institute of Sarajevo Canton. Eight patients were tested by the JU Health Centers of Sarajevo Canton, predominantly from the Novi Grad Health Center, while nine patients were tested at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of KCUS.

Currently, two patients with symptoms of high fever (above 39°C) lasting for several days, accompanied by respiratory and/or gastrointestinal complaints, are hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of KCUS.

Leptospirosis is a disease transmitted from animals to humans. The most common routes of transmission include direct contact with the urine or tissue of infected animals (most commonly rodents – mice and rats, but also livestock and wild animals), as well as indirect contact with contaminated water, soil, food, objects, or bathing in polluted stagnant waters.

KCUS continues to monitor the situation and recommends that citizens seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear.
