KCUS: Omicron strain of coronavirus detected in 10 patients

(Patria) - According to the latest data from regular specific "screening" for currently circulating variants of SARS CoV 2, today at the Department of Clinical Microbiology of the University Clinical Center Sarajevo (KCUS), ten cases of the omicron variant strain of coronavirus were detected.

“Out of one hundred positive samples for SARS CoV 2, detected on December 27, 10 percent showed the presence of this variant. The presence of omicron has been confirmed in patients from health centers: Saraj polje (two cases), Stari grad (two cases), Centar (four cases), and Ilidža (two cases). Further characterization by sequencing in our laboratory will follow in the coming days“, stated the Department of Clinical Microbiology of KCUS.

Also, Goran Čerkez, Assistant Minister of the Federal Ministry of Health, stated for N1 that the situation in FBiH is quite stable. KCUS itself procured specific tests for the omicron strain of coronavirus, thus being able to detect the omicron strain, he emphasized.

“Out of 100 tests performed at KCUS, using a non-specific PCR test that can detect omicron, 10 cases have been confirmed. They need to be confirmed by sequencing as well, and we expect that in 3-4 days it will be confirmed that omicron is present in BiH. The fact is that the situation in FBiH is quite stable, but at the same time, it is evident that we have an increase in incidence in KS, HNK, and Goražde. We expect that cantonal crisis headquarters will continue to monitor the situation and adopt prescribed measures“, Čerkez told N1.
