KBC Mostar first in BiH to equip stroke treatment department

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Despite the difficult conditions of the pandemic, the University Clinical Hospital in Mostar is the first in Bosnia and Herzegovina to equip an angiography suite where, using expensive devices, people affected by stroke can be treated.

A young team of doctors, trained by one of the world's most renowned neuroradiologists, Marko Radoš from the Zagreb University Hospital Centre, has been trained to work on them.

Stroke is one of the most common causes of death and disability in Europe. One-third of patients survive, while another third end up with long-term disability. A major advance in treating such patients worldwide has been brought by the endovascular model. Since this year, it has also been applied at the University Clinical Hospital in Mostar.

This is a major event for the healthcare system in the region of Herzegovina and BiH, a major event for people who suffer a stroke; they now have a chance that someone will remove that clot from their head, said Prof. Dr. Marko Radoš, a specialist neuroradiologist at KBC Zagreb.

Four lives have already been saved. The device, which cost around 1.8 million euros, is operated by young doctors under the supervision of Dr. Marko Radoš from the Zagreb University Hospital Centre, where they completed several years of practice.

What is important to emphasize is that golden window, a time window when patients must report to the emergency neurological service, that the stroke is recognized, that they report to the hospital as soon as possible, says Dr. Sandra Lakičević, from the Neurology Clinic of SKB Mostar.

Treating patients also consumes expensive interventional materials that are not easy to obtain. However, in Mostar, they say that nothing is too expensive when it comes to human life.
