Candidates for SDA President: Izetbegović, Zvizdić, and Mehmedović

SARAJevo, (Patria) - The Congress of the Party of Democratic Action will be held in September this year, which should be confirmed tomorrow by the Main Board meeting at the Holiday Hotel. The Congress will elect the SDA president, deputy president, vice presidents, members of the Main Board, Supervisory Board, and the Court of Honour.

There is already talk of possible candidates for the SDA presidency. Besides the current president Bakir Izetbegović, the most serious candidates are Denis Zvizdić, who is also the SDA vice president, and Šemsudin Mehmedović, a long-time prominent SDA official. 

Relations within the SDA have also been shaken by the process of seeking partners for government, with some favouring the Democratic Front and others the Alliance for a Better Future, while Izetbegović desires both partners to avoid complicating his position within the party leadership by choosing "one side" ahead of the Congress.

The last Congress was held on May 26, 2015, when Izetbegović was elected president of the SDA, having previously served as deputy president. Izetbegović became the third president of the SDA, after Alija Izetbegović and Sulejman Tihić.
At the last Congress, Izetbegović also had opponents Šemsudin Mehmedović and Irfan Ajanović. Izetbegović received 590 votes, Šemsudin Mehmedović 159, and Irfan Ajanović 4 votes. 755 delegates voted, and two ballots were invalid.

Even four years later, there is an opinion within the SDA that it must be reformed from within and that decisions can no longer be made within a narrow circle of party leadership. This is supported by the fact that the former practice of the SDA was to make all important decisions at the party's Main Board, while the sessions of this body are becoming increasingly rare.
