Canadian Minister: It is important to remember and learn from such terrible periods in human history

(Patria) - Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand issued a statement on the occasion of July 11, the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Genocide in Srebrenica.

Anand said that peace in the region depends on peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

- Today, as we mark 30 years since the genocide in Srebrenica, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada remembers the murder of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, as well as the displacement of more than 20,000 women, children, and the elderly, who were forcibly expelled from their homes in Srebrenica by Bosnian Serb forces.

On this very sad occasion, we honor the victims and recognize the enduring pain of survivors and their loved ones as they continue their healing journey.

Following the UN General Assembly resolution adopted in May 2024, today is the second International Day of Remembrance of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide.

Canada is proud to be a sponsor of the resolution because it is important to remember and learn from such terrible periods in our world's history.

Canada remains committed to defending the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement and supports the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and multi-ethnic character of BiH. Peace in the region depends on peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Remembering past crimes and tragedies and holding those responsible accountable is key to building a future based on justice, reconciliation, and lasting peace, Anand said.
