Canada to co-sponsor UN Draft Resolution on Srebrenica

(Patria) - Canada will co-sponsor the UN Draft Resolution which would declare July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica in 1995.

With Resolution M-416, adopted in the Canadian Parliament on October 19, 2010, Canada commemorates July 11 as the Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica.

Resolution M-587, adopted in the Canadian Parliament on April 24, 2015, includes the genocide in Srebrenica and the Srebrenica Remembrance Day as part of the "Month of Remembrance, Condemnation, and Awareness of Genocide" every April in Canada.

Director of the Institute for the Research of Genocide Canada Emir Ramić thanked the Government of Canada and especially the Mission of Canada to the United Nations for their continuous support and respect for the culture of remembrance of the victims of genocide.

Canada's co-sponsorship will significantly contribute to raising awareness and building a common stance towards truth, justice, the culture of remembrance, and peace.

"Emphasizing the values of empathy, justice, and reconciliation, together we can send an important message regarding the global culture of remembrance of the greatest crime after World War II, the genocide in Srebrenica," said Ramić.

He emphasized that this is another victory for truth, justice, and the culture of remembrance of the genocide in Srebrenica in Canada, and another victory for the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the name of a better future for all its citizens and peoples.
