Campaign for wider bicycle use, 10,000 students to be included

Wider use of bicycles as a means of transport among students is the goal of an educational campaign planned by the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Canton Sarajevo titled “Promotion and Significance of Bicycle Use in Public Transport for Students in Canton Sarajevo – Cycling without Stress and with Good Health”, reports the BH News Agency Patria.

The campaign will be implemented in cooperation with the Ministries of Transport and Internal Affairs of KS, the Faculty of Transport and Communications Sarajevo, as well as higher education and secondary school institutions.

- Given that bicycles have been increasingly used as a means of transport in Bosnia and Herzegovina in recent years, and that Canton Sarajevo has a significant number of bicycle paths starting this year, the Transport and Education Sector of the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of KS initiated the launch of this campaign - said the relevant minister Elvir Kazazović.

As the minister stated, the campaign also aims to develop traffic culture, safe and responsible behavior of cyclists in traffic, and raise awareness about bad habits and risky behaviors that contribute to the disruption of traffic culture and traffic accidents.

- Our intention is to create conditions for bicycles to be used not only as a means of recreation, but also as a means of getting to school or university, because this alternative form of transport is also more environmentally friendly - emphasized Osman Lindov, professor at the Faculty of Transport and Communications Sarajevo.

As part of the campaign, among other things, tests will be organized for secondary school and University of Sarajevo students on traffic safety knowledge and regulations in that area. They will also have the opportunity to show their creative side in the form of innovative proposals for bicycle furniture and parking. The final part of the campaign will include a promotional bicycle ride through the city for all participants.

The practical part of the campaign will begin in the spring, and before that, concrete activities will be agreed upon and a list of educators in the campaign will be determined with the principals of secondary schools and deans of faculties.

The campaign will include about 10,000 students from the Canton Sarajevo area.
