What rules does the law bring for cyclists in Sarajevo

The Law on Traffic Regulation in the KS area, which has entered into force, also regulates the movement of cyclists. When it comes to bicycle paths, they must be at a higher level or otherwise separated from the roadway and marked with horizontal and vertical signage for the safety of cyclists, writes Patria agency.

Given that Sarajevo does not have complete cycling infrastructure, cyclists must adhere to the following provisions of the law:

- If there is no specially built path for cycling, then the roadway must be used for cycling, up to a maximum width of one meter from the right edge of the roadway. Exceptionally, if a tram or railway track is located on the right side of the roadway, and there is no specially built bicycle path, cyclists will be allowed to move along existing pedestrian paths, which would be marked as paths for pedestrians and cyclists with special traffic signage in accordance with the Rulebook on traffic signs and signage on roads, the method of marking works and obstacles on the road, and signs given by an authorized person to traffic participants.

Also, it is forbidden for bicycles and mopeds, as well as electric balancing scooters on one or two wheels, to move on surfaces intended for pedestrian traffic.

- On built bicycle paths and bicycle lanes, it is mandatory to respect the installed traffic signage and the defined direction of movement.

The law also stipulates that a motor vehicle driver who crosses a bicycle path or bicycle lane that runs along the roadway on which they are moving when turning their vehicle must yield to a bicycle and moped moving on the bicycle path or bicycle lane in the same or opposite direction, unless otherwise defined by a traffic sign.

- When planning, designing, and constructing new roads in the Canton, it is mandatory to plan the construction of bicycle paths.
