How a brave Bosnian language teacher from Srebrenica fights multiple sclerosis

Suada Suljić from Srebrenica is a brave Bosnian language teacher. Instead of being in the classroom with students, she has been reading about multiple sclerosis (MS), which she suffers from, for eight years. She hopes to find a natural remedy that could be of use to her. There is currently no money for conventional treatment, Patria reports.

Teacher Suljić says that the fight with the disease is difficult, but that her struggle is made even harder because her family and she live on the brink of poverty. They receive only 80 KM in social assistance per month. Her husband tries to earn some extra money every day, but it is usually only enough for the education of their three children. Suljić and her family live in a prefabricated house made of wood.

- Doctors recommended that I use the drug Copaxone. That drug would help me. But, a month's dose of that drug costs about 2,000 KM. I would need to take the drug for five years. So, to be cured, I would need 120,000 KM over the next five years. It is impossible for me to get that money – says Suljić. Her wish at this moment, she says, is at least to slow down the disease so that she can be with her three minor children as long as possible.

Teacher Suljić returned to the Srebrenica village of Sološćuša with her family four years ago. They believe that life in the countryside can be easier for them.

- We recently received four sheep and one ram from a Japanese organization. The agreement is that we must return the lambs from next year to that organization. The following lambs, those from 2018, we can keep for ourselves. We believe that if we manage to raise a large flock, we will be able to buy medicine for me and also build a proper house for our family – says Suljić for Patria.
