How cars get their names: SEAT Ibiza named after Spanish island

Deciding on a car name is similar to the process when parents choose a name for their child. It's something very emotional, something that should last a lifetime – explained Vincenza Magliocco, Director of Product Marketing for the Ibiza model at SEAT, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP).

When it comes to the SEAT Ibiza, it got its name in the 80s when tourism in Spain experienced rapid development. As part of SEAT's strategy to assign each model a name after a Spanish city, the name of the island of Ibiza was the right choice for this car's target group – young, modern, and relaxed people with a Mediterranean spirit.

By launching the first Ibiza, the Spanish company embarked on a path of independence and international fame.

- The island of Ibiza, which was becoming a destination for global tourism, offered an option that best suited the desired positioning of the new model – said Magliocco. In her opinion, the car's name is crucial and therefore should be simple and sound good in all languages.

The Mayor of Ibiza, Virginia Mari, believes that the name of the popular island has greatly benefited SEAT. The values of the SEAT Ibiza's image contain the dynamism and youthful spirit of this island.

- After four generations, this car continues to impress with the same values, youthful spirit, and freshness, while simultaneously maintaining the spirit of our country – said Mari.

After 30 years, with four generations of the model and around 5 million cars sold, Vincenza Magliocco believes that choosing the name Ibiza for this extremely popular model was a real hit. Although the initial model has evolved over time, become more mature, and advanced in terms of modern technologies and quality, the name Ibiza still perfectly suits this model, and she believes that the spirit behind the first Ibiza created in 1984 will continue to live on in the future, incorporating new values and modern trends, so the success story will continue in the future, reports NAP.
