Kahrimanović family from Živinice survives by digging wells

They say that only great misfortune can bring people together, and the floods that hit a large part of Bosnia and Herzegovina in May 2014 showed how united and solidary we can be, writes the BiH news agency Patria.

Said Kahrimanović, a plumber from the village of Litve (Živinice), offered those affected during those difficult days for many families, whose houses and apartments were flooded, to draw clean water from his well free of charge.

As his son Ahmed tells Patria, that was just one way to help those in need.

- People needed clean water the most then, and it was expensive in stores, so we wanted to make it easier at least in that way - says Kahrimanović junior.

He said that his family has been doing this job for decades, and his father did it with his father.

- Today, I do it with my father. There isn't much profit, but we have to somehow provide for our existence. My father was in the army, but he has no income, and my mother doesn't work either - says 19-year-old Ahmed.

As he says, there is much less work in the winter, so Ahmed looks for any job to help his parents and his brother who is in school.

This hardworking young man explains that he digs wells with his father up to a depth of 20 meters, and that there is the most work in the summer and during droughts because people need water then. But they still need to survive until the summer season.
