WHEN THE SYSTEM FAILS: Two young men had to carry their immobile grandmother on a chair because KCUS does not have wheelchairs!

(Patria) - Renato Adrović contacted the Patria News Agency wanting to share an unpleasant experience he had at the University Clinical Center of Sarajevo on Monday evening. He brought his grandmother to the UCCUS because a heart attack or stroke was suspected. However, instead of receiving timely help, Adrović describes that there were no wheelchairs to transport his grandmother, so they had to carry her on a chair.
He also shared his experience on social media:

"Last night, in the evening hours, I brought my grandmother, a 75-year-old woman, to the University Clinical Center of Sarajevo, specifically to the Emergency Medicine Unit (KUM), as the ambulance had directed her there due to a suspected heart attack or stroke. Grandmother disoriented, in serious condition, immobile, and completely dependent on help.

In front of the entrance, I asked an employee for a wheelchair so we could bring her inside as quickly and safely as possible. We waited for five minutes, a worker came and coldly announced: 'We don't have wheelchairs.' Instead, he brought us a fixed chair and, with the remark 'have her sit and carry her,' went back to his work.

I cannot describe the humiliation and anger in words. Not towards the person who was merely a messenger of a system that does not function, but towards an institution that should be a symbol of hope, professionalism, and care for life.

Together with my brother, we carried my sick, tormented grandmother fifty meters through the night, in a fixed chair without wheels, to the entrance of the KUM.

After five hours of waiting at the KUM, sometime after midnight, we received information that my grandmother had to be hospitalized in the Neurology department and that we should wait for an ambulance. The vehicle arrived, and I, as a civilian, worked alongside the entire staff to load my grandmother into the vehicle. We arrived in front of the Neurology department, and again, I, as a civilian, worked to unload my grandmother from the vehicle. This is the bottom. The bottom of the system. The bottom of healthcare. The bottom of a society that has allowed the sick to no longer seek help, but to pray that they do not need 'institutions.' This is not just a personal story. This is the story of thousands of people who face a humiliating system every day," Adrović stated.
