Josep Borrell: EU must develop an 'appetite for power'

(Patria) – European Union governments must be prepared to intervene in international crises or risk prolonging the blockade in their foreign policy, EU diplomat Josep Borrell said on Sunday.

- Europe must develop an appetite for power, said the EU foreign policy chief in his address at the Munich Security Conference, emphasizing that this does not only refer to military power: 'We must act... not just comment and express concern', Borrell stressed.

The EU rarely manages to reach a consensus on foreign policy issues, from Libya to Venezuela.

New leadership in Brussels has led to a new wave of diplomatic initiatives regarding foreign policy, especially issues related to the Middle East.

The EU is still divided on its reaction to US President Donald Trump's peace proposal for Israelis and Palestinians. The same applies to the issue of the UN arms embargo on Libya.

- In the absence of unity on decisions, the majority should act, Borrell believes.
