Around one hundred bodies, likely of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, were washed ashore near the Libyan city of Tajoura, reported on Tuesday on a Maltese website, the Patria news agency reports.
It is believed that these are victims of a vessel sinking in which they were traveling, near this coastal city located about 10 km east of Tripoli, the Migrant Report website reported, citing a statement from a spokesman for the Libyan Office for Migration.
Rajoura is a known departure point for migrant vessels heading towards European shores. Among the dead are women and children, but authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of bodies or their nationality.
The bodies have been transferred to a hospital in Tripoli. If the death toll is officially confirmed, it will be the biggest refugee tragedy since April 18, when 850 people went missing at sea after a ship sank near the Libyan coast.
