SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Juan Guaidó addressed demonstrators in Altamira in the afternoon (CET) and stated that he has been communicating with the army for years, but that today he knows that the army does not support the dictator Maduro.
Operation Liberty has begun, Guaido stated, as reported by The Guardian.
"Today it is clear to us that the armed forces are with the people, not with the dictator," Guaido told the crowd and added, "we know that all Venezuelans are for change and the Constitution." Guaido also tweeted "Now is the moment.".
"This is a one-way street. The future belongs to us: the people and the armed forces united to end the usurpation," Guaido stated on Twitter.
The Brazilian newspaper Folha de São Paulo reports that President Jair Bolsonaro has called an emergency meeting on Venezuela.
Reuters writes that the opposition leader has departed from the La Carlota military base in Caracas.
"Today, interim president Juan Guaidó announced the start of Operation Liberty. The U.S. government fully supports the Venezuelan people in their quest for freedom and democracy. Democracy cannot be defeated," U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted.
