The pit suddenly narrowed and the board could not go further; if that hadn't happened, no one would have found the boarder

A young boarder from Lukavica, whom Sarajevo GSS members rescued two days ago from a deep pit on Mount Bjelašnica after he fell into it together with his board, now feels well, and the very next day he went to the place where the accident happened to mark the pit so that no one else would get hurt.

 >>> Drama on Bjelašnica: Boarder fell into an eight-meter deep pit, rescued by GSS members

The unfortunate young man, who after the tragedy blames only himself for not being careful enough, told this to the Patria news agency.

Željko Mrakić (31), who works as a caterer in a Sarajevo pub and has been boarding as a hobby for five years, told the Patria agency that he knows boarding on unmaintained trails is risky, but the desire for it is stronger than him.

And on Tuesday afternoon, it could have cost him his life. He was boarding with six other friends when he suddenly fell into a pit whose exact depth no one knows. Željko only knows that he stopped at the ninth meter of the abyss, after the pit narrowed slightly at that point and the board, to which he was firmly tied, could not go further.
Below the narrowed part, there was again a large opening, and the end was nowhere in sight.

- I wasn't scared immediately. I was just worried whether anyone would hear my calls – says Mrakić, adding that he doesn't know how he fell so naively. Only 20 minutes before the accident, he had passed by that opening.

Željko's fate was decided in seconds. His fall was seen by a boarder, a foreigner from England, who happened to be nearby at the time of the accident. If the boarder, whom Željko doesn't even know, had not alerted help, things would certainly have turned out differently.

- There was no chance I could get out on my own. The pit is deep with vertical walls. After an hour spent in the pit, I started getting cramps because I had been standing motionless on the board, which was stuck between the walls of the pit, for too long. That upset me a bit – explains Željko, adding that he is grateful to the rescuers who pulled him to safety.
