Jair Bolsonaro first right-wing president of Brazil since military dictatorship three decades ago

(Patria) - The new president of Brazil, far-right oriented Jair Bolsonaro, took the oath of office on the first day of the New Year, Reuters reports.

In his speech, the former captain of the Brazilian army promised to fight corruption and violent crime, Al Jazeera reported.

Bolsonaro, according to Reuters, came to power on a wave of huge voter dissatisfaction due to political corruption, a huge crime rate, and the country's declining economic power.

He is the first right-wing president of Brazil since the military dictatorship three decades ago, of which he is an open sympathizer.

Bolsonaro, 63, has gone from a marginal congressman to a leader from whom many Brazilians expect to curb pervasive corruption and violence, according to the Associated Press.

The new president of Brazil is also a sympathizer of US President Donald Trump, who sent Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to his inauguration.
