Condolences on the passing of Hasan Čengić

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Condolences have been extended to the Čengić family on the passing of Hasan Čengić, one of the founders of the SDA.

Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Šefik Džaferović sent a telegram of condolences on the passing of Hasan Čengić.

"I received the news of Hasan Čengić's death with sadness. I extend my condolences to his family and friends. As one of the intellectuals condemned in the Sarajevo process, then as one of the founders of the Party of Democratic Action and a member of the Government of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the aggression, Hasan Čengić left an indelible mark on recent Bosnian-Herzegovinian history, making an exceptional contribution to the struggle for the survival and freedom of the Bosniak people.

We will always remember his unique insight and strong sense of justice. May God grant him paradise and his family patience," Džaferović stated.

SDA President Bakir Izetbegović emphasized that he was deeply saddened by the news of the death of his long-time political associate, and above all, friend Hasan Čengić.

"He dedicated his life to the struggle for truth, justice, and freedom, and in that struggle for the common good, he was prepared to pay a high price by sacrificing his own freedom. His contribution to the struggle for the religious freedoms of Muslims, for the political emancipation of Bosniaks, and then for the defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be remembered, and permanently etched in the memory of good people and the history of our homeland. I ask Almighty Allah to grant him paradise and reward, and his family patience," Izetbegović stated. 

Čengić passed away at the age of 64. He was born on August 30, 1957, in the village of Odžak near Foča, and graduated from the former Islamic Theological Faculty, now the Faculty of Islamic Sciences, in Sarajevo.

The funeral prayer for Hasan Čengić will be held on Monday in the courtyard of the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque in Sarajevo at 11 AM. The second funeral prayer and burial will take place at the Čengić family cemetery in Odžak near Ustikolina at 2:30 PM, the Islamic Community in BiH announced.
