SUDDEN DECISION Brian Aggeler steps down as Head of OSCE Mission in BiH

(Patria) - Brian Aggeler, the current Head of the OSCE Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is stepping down from this position, Vijesti.ba has unofficially learned.

The specific reasons for Aggeler's decision to step down are not yet known, and the OSCE has not yet officially commented.

His mandate was marked by engagement in issues of electoral reform, human rights, the rule of law, and support for independent institutions in BiH, and he was often a vocal advocate for transparency and functional democratic processes in the country.

According to Vijesti.ba, an American official is expected to temporarily take his place.

Speculation about his departure comes at a sensitive time for Bosnia and Herzegovina, in which the international community plays an important role in maintaining political stability.

Brian Aggeler has been the Head of the OSCE Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina since October 11, 2022. Prior to that, Aggeler served as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France, from 2019 to August 2022. He also served as Senior Political Advisor (Minister-Counselor for Political Affairs) at the same embassy from 2017 to 2019.

Before arriving in France, he served as the Director of the Office of Assistance Coordination in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department, where he led a team of 70 people in Washington and two regional offices, coordinating all U.S. assistance to the Middle East in line with political priorities.

As a senior career diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service with the rank of "Minister Counselor," Aggeler previously served as the Coordinator for Economic and Development Assistance at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, where he oversaw the planning and implementation of annual civilian assistance programs worth over $700 million, carried out by various U.S. agencies.

He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Skopje, North Macedonia.

His previous diplomatic assignments include Political Counselor in Hanoi, Vietnam; Chargé d'Affaires at the U.S. Mission to UNESCO in Paris; as well as assignments in New Delhi, Chennai, Budapest, Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), and Washington D.C.

Before joining the U.S. Foreign Service, he was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Central African Republic.

Brian Aggeler is married to his wife, Angela Aggeler, also a senior officer in the U.S. Foreign Service. Their daughter, Madeleine, is a freelance journalist and writer.
