(Patria) - An American spy plane is currently flying over Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to Flightradar data.
It is a Bombardier Challenger 650, better known as Artemis, which the US military uses for data collection. The aircraft is privately owned and the US military "leases it by the hour".
The plane took off from Constanta, Romania, located on the Black Sea coast, where it is stationed due to the aggression against Ukraine. Since the start of the Russian attack, the aircraft has conducted hundreds of flights near the war zone.
"These planes can see very far when flying at 40,000 feet (about 12 kilometers)," said Mike Chagnon, vice president of Leidos Defence Group, for the website Defensone.
The concept behind this spy plane differs greatly from listening to enemy chatter on the battlefield and instead allows the military to track sophisticated communications from hostile nation states from a safe distance, writes Robbreport.com.
The aircraft participate in the US Army's High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System (HADES), a strategy for collecting high-altitude intelligence. The idea is to replace current turboprops used in conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq for roadside bombs and insurgents with more advanced, less vulnerable aircraft technology.
"They want multi-layered sensor capabilities from space to mud. This is the layer in the air," Chagnon said for Defenseone.com.
Leidos owns and operates the aircraft, but the military can connect to the plane's sensors via satellite to gather intelligence.
Essentially, it is a rental of the aircraft by the hour since there are no long-term contracts.
"It benefits the government and the country. We are responsible for keeping the aircraft in the air. And they (the military) no longer have to have that long logistical tail, which is sometimes the most expensive part of a government program," Chagnon said.
