Izetbegović receives Dieng: Concerning denial of the Srebrenica genocide

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Bakir Izetbegović received Adam Dieng, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide.

The interlocutors agreed that the relativization and denial of the Srebrenica genocide and other war crimes, present in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region for more than two decades after the establishment of peace, is a concerning phenomenon.

On the same level are the glorification and rewarding of convicted war criminals, their appointments to public functions, and the fact that student dormitories and other institutions are named after them.

Such phenomena, it was emphasized during the conversation, not only do not contribute to the reconciliation process but generate new divisions and hatred, sending a very bad message to younger generations.

It was emphasized that, alongside continuous dialogue on building trust, it is necessary to legally sanction any hate speech, including the denial of war crimes and genocide.

Dieng particularly praised the project „Dialogue for the Future“, jointly initiated by the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the UN, emphasizing that it is the right path for establishing dialogue and restoring trust among peoples, not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina but also in the region.
